I noticed tonight that there are 762 members in this Belly Dance Electronica tribe.
I posted that we would be doing a live Belly Dance Industrial performance with a lot of electronics
in it within shooting distance of the SF and Monterey Bay areas and
I was shocked that not one person came to the gig from this tribe.
Are you all only interested in recorded music only? Is there just not a strong connection
with people actually playing music like this in public or have I just overstayed my welcome here.
I'm not overly sensitive about this, but I'm perplexed a little.
The gig was extremely well recieved by most who came but there just weren't very many belly dancers there.

Re: Is it just me?
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 5:17 AMI know for me the issue is that I live in Ohio. SF is a bit far to travel for a concert. ^_~

Re: Is it just me?
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 6:39 AMI live in the city of Vallejo and I am 53 years old. Industrial music is really not my cup of tea at this late date.
As far as live music, I will be attending Maduro's premiere party and he will be performing. therefore, I am not inclined to recorded music only.
Sorry you are disappointed with the electronica tribe.

Re: Is it just me?
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 7:26 AMI'd guess a lot of that's geography, as above. (I'm in Minnesota myself.)

Re: Is it just me?
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:38 AMhaving performed for a while here and there
as well as promoted, the general rule on any
type of postering is usually 5% response is good,
10% rare...outside of that, how many of the 762 people are
within your target area from this tribe, and how many
had other events they were involved in or more
closely aligned with...for me, pretty much anyone
elses gig occuring thurs-sunday is a no go year
round because I will be booked to perform already...
and after all, this space, may not, hopefully, be about
free postering ops, and more about, discussion
for mutual illumination, interest and exchange of
process, tools and encouragement...maybe, perhaps, hmmm?
and if that was your March 17th gig, you do realize that you would
have been going up against multitudinous variations on
St Patricks Day events, I happened to be playing an Ethereal
Celtronica gig that night, though if it was another Monday
and I happened to be in your area I would have given your
event a shot...my expereince for consistent break even gigs,
minimum 250 people, is that you need 1,500 to 2,000 fans
in your call book, ergo, Rick, fare forth and acquire fan base,
but, with the thought in mind that your production/performer compatriots
and the places where we gather, may not be the most fertile ground
for such efforts...

Re: Is it just me?
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 11:46 AMLikewise....I live in the ILL and I couldn't make it out there for anything. Especially when it was my hubby's birthday and all as well. Sorry....Perhaps trying to network with other people in other towns to make the same sort of events to happen might be best. But I doubt that all of the 762 members meant to not show up....or live in the area to just come. Perhaps you should post a thread about finding out who would like to come to an event like this...or would want to get an event together. I'm pretty sure all of the members don't live in the SF/ Monterey Bay area. -

Re: Is it just me?
Fri, April 4, 2008 - 12:06 PMI don't consider Santa Cruz "SF Bay Area." Santa Cruz is a fairly isolated pocket, and it's 120 round-trip miles from Pacifica, which definitely qualifies as Bay Area.
I make it to Santa Cruz about 6x/year for my favorite bands. -

Re: Is it just me?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 4:45 AMI guess the thing for me is that Tribe.net seems to be much much more creative and
artistically inclined that , say MySpace and other similar online communities,
but Tribesters seem to have a terrible record for actually supporting the artist that
is in their communities.
obviously lots of people are not even in the Bay Area or environs and so it's not appropriate,
but I am discovering that about 5 times as many people come to events publicized at
MySpace compared to when they are publicized at Tribe.
I also here that Santa Cruz is fairly far away from the SF Bay Area but 5-15 people a week come down
to our weekly Goth night from the SF Bay area so I do know that people will travel.
Personally, I go to San Francisco 2-5 times a month to see goth/industrial/electronica or experimental shows.
The kinds of music that we like seem to be pretty darn rare and even more so in live contexts.
I'm still a little mystified, but I'll live.........................lol. -

Re: Is it just me?
Sun, April 6, 2008 - 11:56 AMfor me, myspace is artist/troupe/event specific
to Tribes general community vibe...if I do have
open time on tour I always try to hook up with
local events, and as I am a below the radar
guy in a van tour kinda performer, that usually
means I get to go to someone elses gig while
around, depending on billeting, as I rarely
take in enough to hang about in paid accom...

Re: Is it just me?
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 10:24 PMmyspace has a better postering feature: myspace bulletins. posting stuff on tribe.net tribes you have to hope that people visit the tribe and see your post..
btw, you have attended performances by other members of this tribe? -
-
Re: Is it just me?
Thu, April 10, 2008 - 11:06 PMI have attended shows by Cheb I Sabbah and Bass Nectar (though I don't consider them to be belly dance electronica)
but I haven't really seen any other belly dance electronica projects actually play live in my area or in the Bay Area.
I also haven't been in the tribe for a really long time.
I've also played professionally and recreationally with a lot of the dancers and teachers in this area for the last
30 years...........Palika, Sahar, Helene, Amel Tafsout (Algeria), and many, many others.
I've also done a lot of live looping mixtures of electronic music and processed acoustic music for dancers live.
I've seen an increasing amount of Tribal and Gothic Belly Dancers using modern tracks with electronica in them, but
not very many of them who actually use real time electronica acts in their performances.
How about you, Notecrusher? what's your scene like in Boston? is anyone out there doing live belly dance electronica.
Do you, yourself, make music in this style? I don't know your stuff. -

Re: Is it just me?
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 9:29 AMI use real time electronica, and I have guest artists perform, ariellah, Urban tribal...
Beats antique is a live drum kit, 2 macs computers, violin, stand up bass, and turkish banjo

Re: Is it just me?
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 8:30 PMJust for the sake of clarification...
What do you consider classifies as "belly dance electronica"? Please be specific as you can.
As for myself, I consider belly dance electronica to be any music that was created using (but not exclusively) drum loops/samples and/or other digitally created sounds where the final product was intended for use by belly dancers for performance. The piece should incorporate middle eastern beats and/or middle eastern melodic modes.
The genre "electronica" is defined as "any of various forms of dance music featuring electronic instruments and synthesizers; also, collective term for electronic instruments used in making music". So, consequently for me "belly dance electronica" implies electronica used or insired by belly dancing.
BTW - I hate labels. Can't we just call it "music I like to dance to" and be done with it?

Re: Is it just me?
Tue, April 8, 2008 - 7:47 PMLOL,
well, for what it's worth (and this tour won't be industrial belly dancing music)
I'll be on a solo live looping tour of 10 countries in Scandinavia, Germany
and the British Isles commencing on May 8th.
I'll be performing in the British Isles:
At the Norwich Live Looping Festival on June 19th
at the KLINKER in London on June 20th
At the Swansea (Wales) Live Looping Festival on June 24th
At the Londonderry (Northern Ireland) Live Looping Festival on June 26th
If you are near any of those events, Lecky, come up, introduce yourself and say hi.
I have a very unusual and pretty creative found sound/live looping performance to present on this tour. -

Re: Is it just me?
Mon, June 30, 2008 - 9:27 AMI posted a beats antique gig on my tribe for San Jose, the turnout was great (almost all from tribe)...but I posted a blog, then on every listing for as many related tribes as I could find, put it out to my friends network,
I actually feel that Tribe is super supportive and it is one of my main ways to get the word out. You just have to post in lots of places and make sure people actually know it's happening (just don't post in the topics area of tribes, people get miffed). -

Re: Is it just me?
Tue, July 1, 2008 - 4:09 AMGreat to hear, Zoe,
My experience may just have been anecdotal.
Also, it used to be really simple to get to Santa Cruz from the Bay Area but now
gas prices are making it a lot costlier.
Maybe my Industrial MiddleEastern project can come up and play somewhere in the Bay Area this coming summer. I'm just finished with my long European tour so I'll have some time to perform.
Are you up for a double bill somewhere, Zoe?
And Falik, do you actually perform yourself or do you just make tracks for recordings? -
