I posted that we would be doing a live Belly Dance Industrial performance with a lot of electronics
in it within shooting distance of the SF and Monterey Bay areas and
I was shocked that not one person came to the gig from this tribe.

Are you all only interested in recorded music only? Is there just not a strong connection
with people actually playing music like this in public or have I just overstayed my welcome here.

I'm not overly sensitive about this, but I'm perplexed a little.

The gig was extremely well recieved by most who came but there just weren't very many belly dancers there.

Right now I'm debating on a digital recorder and think I'm seriously considering the Samson Zoom H2 and a boatload of SD Cards.

Anyone have realtime experience with this or similar products, and/or discussing the options with the locals in Cairo? Might street musicians be amenable to a little sampling?

This class is appropriate for cabaret, tribal, or my personal favorite, tribaret dancers. Non-belly dancing poi dancers will also be accommodated as poi principles, dance theory and fire safety will also be covered. The class will be a $35 donation, payable on PayPal to flamegoddess@gmail.com Glow poi and silk flag poi will be for sale, or you can pre-order a set. Email me at flamegoddess@gmail.com for more information!

Jai Shanti Yoga is a beautiful yoga studio in the heart of Candler Park, close to public transportation, Little 5 Points and Candler Park Village. Their website is www.jaishantiyoga.com for directions and other class times.

I am interested in networking with anyone in Nanimo, Tofino, Sunshine Coast, Whistler, Kelowna, Nelson, Penticton, Vernon, Kamloops and as far as Calgary who might be able to give some leads on promoters/venues that would take on a booking of this fantastic artist.

check out: http://www.jefstott.com and http://www.myspace.com/jefstott
Jef will probaly be touring with Dumbek master Drumspyder (http://www.drumspyder.com/).

These two are versatile enough to do just live acoustic sets, suitable for small concerts or Haflas, or even in-home shows, to nightclubs for just djing, and then into their full life PA rig with laptops, Oud and drum. So- there's lots of options and flexibility for different events/venues/promoters.
I need some input. I am totally tech. impaired and I need to get up to date on things. I want to get an MP3 player but don't know which one to get. I'd like to know your personal experiences. My computer won't let me burn CD's anymore. I'd like to get a player that can hold a lot of songs. I guess the iPod only works with iTunes. I've never used iTunes before. Does it have a good selection? I like really out there stuff, mostly Industrial. It wouldn't seem a good buy if there isn't much of that to download. Also ease of use? Basically I'll be playing this sucker in the car while making my LOOONG trek to class everyday.
Thanks,
You can get Evolution on itunes, cd baby, or amazon. I recommend giving a good listen to the tracks "High Life" and "Nosering". I think I've danced Nosering to death already.
From CD Baby:
Sharaab's signature sound incorporates elements of Indian classical and folk as well as Middle and Far Eastern music, which he integrates seamlessly with contemporary electronica, ambient, downtempo, breakbeat, and drum'n'bass styles.

I am very excited to announce that I am putting on another gothic belly dance event here in the Boston area--Arlington, to be exact: Shimmy in the Shadows! The incomparable Aepril Schaile will be teaching a workshop on her fabulous veilwork, and then we'll have an honest-to-goodness gothic hafli. Want to perform? Contact me asap for a dance slot, requests will be taken on a first come, first serve basis and the number of performances will be limited, because open floor dancing will be an important part of this event.

Also, if you vend anything you think might be of interest to gothic belly dancers and those who love them, you are more than welcome to drop me a line about vending at the event. I'm really looking forward to this, I felt like Raks Spooki back in the fall really helped create a sense of community for those of us exploring the darker side of dance and I'm excited to help keep that feeling alive! ... er, I mean, undead ;-)

You create it here:
http://www.mp3assets.com/

Example of one:
http://www.iqons.com/mariaphotographer

Do you know a place where they play ethno techno music and have links to songs in MP3 streaming format? (legal MP3 streaming site) or a place where I can buy individual songs in MP3 format?

Thanks

María

So, my car got broken into and 7 years of dance music was stolen. Most of it was not backed up (I know, no excuse). Anyway, a lot of it was music that I had just acquired over the years and I'm unsure of the names of the artists and titles of songs.

I'm slowly but surely starting to rebuild my collection (heavy sigh), but I sure could use some ideas on new music! I'm a tribal dancer who regularly performs to Cheb i Sabbah, DJ Lorin Bassnectar, Karsh Kale, Amon Tobin,Ekova, dub step DJ's, etc... but I really love heavily percussive, industrial sounding world fusion music.

Can anyone suggest some artists or DJ's that I should look into? Oh, and if you could also suggest where I can find the music, I would appreciate it so much! Good dance karma!
Thank you!

Not quite electronica, or world music, or hip-hop, or a lot of different things, I think my description of Filistine goes for both -- "one of the good guys in the realm of world music re-workings and re-imaginings, and the set is an amazing, high-powered drill, pokin’ holes in the walls separating cultures."
They both have a bunch of free music online, and I made two recent posts in my dance blog, APOSTATE, that point to some of that music:

Heavy Industrial oriented traditional Belly Dancing music

for any and all to dance to
at this week's DEFIANCE, Friday (midnight performance), November 17th
at Club Caution (516 Front Street, Santa Cruz)

I will be joined by Switchblade Symphony founding member, Robin Jacobs on guitar and
the amazing John Connell (multi-instrumentalist) on bass guitar.

I've been disappointed that a lot of tribal and gothic belly dancing music always seems so ambient and new-agey at times
so I wanted to do something a little darker and aggressive yet till use rhythms that anyone who's ever even had a beginning
belly dancing class would be able to dance to.

All the rhythms will be traditional......................all the sounds will NOT be.

I hope you can make it, I hope you feel like dancing.

Urceus Exit from Vancouver ( www.UrceusExit.com ) a band in the strong tradition of Vancouver bands Skinny Puppy and

I have been so aggrevated, looking and looking and looking online to try and find lyrics to the song "Heer" by Nitin Sawhney, on the cd "Desert Grooves". They are impossible to find!

Anyone know where I can find the lyrics?

There's an Indian story, kind of similar to Romeo and Juliet, about Heer and Ranjha.
If this is what the song is about, I'd really like to know!

When I heard the song...I was thinking "What does this song feel like it means?"...and I thought it felt like:
Incredibly beautiful love, but with some kind of sadness, and maybe even death...but the love is stronger than any love.
That's what I feel like when I hear that song...

Then, I searched around and found that Heer story...and it would fit in perfectly with what I IMAGINED the song means...but I don't really know if that is what it's about or not.

The song is listed as being by Nitin Sawhney...So, I looked him up, and there is nothing about lyrics written on the website of his. There wasn't really a clear contact email address I could send such a question to...

If anyone can help, I would like to know what the song really, officially is about, and find an English translation to the lyrics!

Also, ANY of the songs on Desert Groove...I'd like those lyric translations, too. I haven't searched for them yet, but if they are as hard to find as Heer lyrics, I'll be sad!

Thanks,
Amethyst

Hey everyone, I just arrived back in New York to visit and to kick off a tour doing 20 shows around the United States.
For the last 8 months I have been living in Berlin and it has been a total trip.
It feels good to be back in the states and I am hoping to see all my New York friends together this Monday at Deep Space where I will be doing my only NY show.
It will be a special night doing an all-live global dub soundsystem with Last Poets legend Umar Bin Hassan, who also was on the last Common record as well as Trumpet playing madman Satish on horn and electronics.
And of course resident DJ, Francois K.
Please come and join me, catch up with good friends in a fun night!!
