Vadalna presents…
Boston’s first World Beat Night featuring Beats Antique!!

The tribal music event of the season! Don't miss the unstoppable trio as they rock Boston for one night only!

BEATS ANTIQUE, an Oakland based group featuring ZOE JAKES, DAVID SATORI, AND SIDECAR TOMMY, have stumbled down the rabbit hole and emerged anew on the other side. COLLIDE is a product of that absurd adventure, forging a curious alliance between middle eastern traditions and potent west coast circus, underground hip hop, breakbeat brass band, downtempo, glitch and dubstep. BEATS ANTIQUE'S second album has brought the paradox of electro-acoustic music into the future.

The event includes:
-Opening performances by Incus (tribal medicine rock) and Vadalna Tribal Dance Co.!
-Beats Antique featured at the top of the night
-World Beat set from Boston's own DJ Lavoie!

WORKSHOP DESCRIPTIONS:
Knock 'em dead!
What works on stage, you ask, especially those bigger ones with the fancy lighting, back stages, and sound guys? This class is for those wanting an understanding of what really carries all the way to the back rows. Get ready for big fantastic whip-sharp moves supplied with clear and concise explanations for graceful and flawless execution. Tips and concepts to make you hip work bigger, sharper, and more polished (thus more effective on stage), and how to improve speed while not loosing clarity of movement.

The Art of Making It Weird (Slow, Lovely, and Strange)
We are going to ride the edge between exquisite and strange in this slow movement workshop. All that ooey gooey stuff that is so fun and delicious to watch and do will be focused on, using elements from the head down through to the fingertips. We will be focusing on super slow isolations, extreme undulations, and upper body technique. Hand work, elbow work, wrist work, posture, oblique strengthening (to get that horizontal pull that makes mayas and hip slides so exquisite and strange), belly rolls with emphasis on stomach musculature. And of course the elusive flutter!

ABOUT ZOE JAKES…
Zoe is a proud member of The Indigo, which recently was on the road touring their new show Le Serpent Rouge. She has been touring with Bellydance Superstars since the fall of 2005 and can be seen performing on their new Tribal Fusions DVD. Her first DVD, a drum solo choreography, will be coming out this winter. Combining talents with David Satori and Tommy Cappel to form the band Beats Antique, Zoe has just release their second album with CIA records, Collide. When not with The Indigo, she tours with The Yard Dogs Road Show, a cartoon circus sideshow of wacky dimension, and has been seen tearing it up with the Extra Action Marching Band.
An innovative dancer, Zoe has been said to have her own unique take on Tribal bellydance. She takes her influence from Art Nouveau, tango, Breakdance, and Indian classical dance as well as all things vaudeville. Zoe was nominated for Zaghareets best interpretive artist 2007, and The Indigo recently won best troupe 2008. She loves unicorns and has never once doubted their existence.

Either dark versus light (I rather like this idea) with darkness overcoming, or both dark and gothic but with also an elegant oriental feel. So some light bits in the music as well as dark (preferably) We're traditionally trained in Egyptian but have also danced gothic stuff too :-).

I'm very proud to announce the release of my good friend Manko Eponymous' "Kaihealoha" album. It is available digitally on Amazon mp3, emusic, and other fine digital download sites. It should be on itunes in the coming weeks. Manko Eponymous is a Washington DC area tribal fusion electronic, spoken word, and rock/folk fusion artist. "Kaihealoha" is a great album from a great friend, made for a great friend and for the greatest cause.

Here are two good reasons you must buy this...

The first reason is that some of the proceeds will help support Kaihea and Manko's mounting financial constraints from medical costs; Kaihea is a pillar in the Washington DC tribal bellydance and fire community who has been fighting cancer for several years. The second reason you must buy this album is because it's a wonderfully rich mix of world tribal fusion electronica and powerful rock/acoustic ballads.

If you are looking for tribal electronic music to bellydance to check out "Eliseo," "Kummer," "Pura Dai," "Black Rook," "I Enigma," and "Alive," among others. The track "Kummer" has been sought after by many artists and renowned dancers for awhile (I've been looking to get a copy of this unreleased song for nearly 2 years). But outside the realm of tribal fusion electronica, other portions of the release explore a range of rock and even humor - see "the Melodia Song" for a good laugh.

This album is for a good cause and it's also a great body of work that I've personally waited to hear for several years. Download this release now on emusic, amazon mp3, or other digital download sites today.
ABOUT:
Fin de Siècle (or "end of the century" in French) is a new 7 track short album from Maduro merging breakbeats and world fusion progressions with side show sounds and marches from the turn of the century. Fin de Siècle is a degenerative audio snapshot capturing 100 year-old band sounds, carnival and circus progressions, broken organ grinders, as well as fragmented beats, dubstep, and hip hop accents.

Taffeta Wings previously priced at $199 are now $159! For a limited time, you can receive an additional 20% DISCOUNT while current supplies last, an amazing value for this very high-quality fabric at $127!!! (This is $72 less than the original price, email me directly to receive the discount :)

I have just received a brand new limited production of Taffeta Isis Wings! This heavier, opaque fabric creates a stunning, shimmering effect with movement. Taffeta Wings are as luxurious as wearing a beautiful gown! They can look like a cape when draped down your back.

Taffeta fabric is a crisp, smooth lustrous fabric with a slight sheen made of various fibers, such as silk, rayon, or nylon, supposed to have originated in Persia. The name, derived from Persian, means "twisted woven." Taffeta is in the same class and demand as satin made of silk. It is considered to be a "high end" fabric, suitable for use in ball gowns, wedding dresses, and in interiors for curtains or wallcovering. Taffeta was also used to make medieval Noble Ladies dresses.

New Taffeta Colors: Black, Plum, Turquoise, Lilac Purple, Burgundy Wine, Lemon Lime, Ruby Sapphire.

Hi, I'm seeking like minds.

I grew up designing and making my own clothes since a little girl, and apprenticed with Mirage in Melbourne, Australia’s largest CMT house for major Oz designers; before studying fine art at Heatherleys in London. I was also sponsored by Mirage and a runner-up in the Australian Fashion Awards. Then I traveled and lived in a few different countries and got into planet activism and events, then running an online arts community, then helping manage festivals. Now current fashion has caught up with the designs in my head and the ideals in my heart and I recently returned to designing eco-friendly wearable art.

The stuff I’m now designing and reconstructing are Eco Couture, individual one-off’s made from recycled and vintage fabrics. My design skills are coming back and improving with each collection batch. Sketches and photos of recent experiments are up at http://www.recycledfordancing.com plus I already have clothes in 2 boutiques, addresses are on the site under Retail Stores.

I also do custom stage gear; before working on festivals full time I actually did costumes for Music TV dancers, musicians, and theatre. I had a few designs on national TV way back when, on long running music TV show called Countdown. And I designed costumes for a whole Bertolt Brecht play at the Chelsea Playhouse in London, plus whole wardrobes for nightclub dancers and contemporary cabaret, and fire dancers for festivals in Byron Bay.

My current designs are inspired by San Francisco and Japanese street fashion, as well as European Couture and Burning Man. For me it is sculpture using textiles with a wearable framework and chaos, I take something that I see and mix it with something else that I see, each piece inspiring the next piece. Anyway take a peek at http://www.recycledfordancing.com for art’s sake, and keep me in mind when you are thinking of new additions to your wardrobe or recycling your wardrobe.

Thank you for being here.
I've googled and searched and I just cannot seem to find some decent Celtic electronica for fire dancing.

I'm kind of set on drums 'for now' with Hadeeth I & II and Wizoo Darbuka, plus plenty of samples from friends. Could always use more, but I'm extremely interested in usable samples of mizmar, oud, ney, kanun, etc.

Anyone with any input? I'm considering the following:
- MOTU Ethno Instrument
- Sibelius Sounds: World Music
- East West Quantum Leap RA
- Orient World
- Ethno World 3

All are varying in price. Some include loops, most include drums.

Thoughts?
Thanks!

I'd like to know your personal experiences. My computer won't let me burn CD's anymore. I'd like to get a player that can hold a lot of songs. I guess the iPod only works with iTunes. I've never used iTunes before. Does it have a good selection? I like really out there stuff, mostly Industrial. It wouldn't seem a good buy if there isn't much of that to download. Also ease of use? Basically I'll be playing this sucker in the car while making my LOOONG trek to class everyday.

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event.

I am very excited to announce that I am putting on another gothic belly dance event here in the Boston area--Arlington, to be exact: Shimmy in the Shadows! The incomparable Aepril Schaile will be teaching a workshop on her fabulous veilwork, and then we'll have an honest-to-goodness gothic hafli. Want to perform? Contact me asap for a dance slot, requests will be taken on a first come, first serve basis and the number of performances will be limited, because open floor dancing will be an important part of this event.

Also, if you vend anything you think might be of interest to gothic belly dancers and those who love them, you are more than welcome to drop me a line about vending at the event. I'm really looking forward to this, I felt like Raks Spooki back in the fall really helped create a sense of community for those of us exploring the darker side of dance and I'm excited to help keep that feeling alive! ... er, I mean, undead ;-)

So, my car got broken into and 7 years of dance music was stolen. Most of it was not backed up (I know, no excuse). Anyway, a lot of it was music that I had just acquired over the years and I'm unsure of the names of the artists and titles of songs.

I'm slowly but surely starting to rebuild my collection (heavy sigh), but I sure could use some ideas on new music! I'm a tribal dancer who regularly performs to Cheb i Sabbah, DJ Lorin Bassnectar, Karsh Kale, Amon Tobin,Ekova, dub step DJ's, etc... but I really love heavily percussive, industrial sounding world fusion music.

Can anyone suggest some artists or DJ's that I should look into? Oh, and if you could also suggest where I can find the music, I would appreciate it so much! Good dance karma!
Thank you!

Not quite electronica, or world music, or hip-hop, or a lot of different things, I think my description of Filistine goes for both -- "one of the good guys in the realm of world music re-workings and re-imaginings, and the set is an amazing, high-powered drill, pokin’ holes in the walls separating cultures."

I wanted to let you all know I started a new tribe called Belly vision http://tribes.tribe.net/bellyvision which is intended to be a resource for bellydancers to check out what I have been capturing on video since I started this hobby! There will be links to You Tube and Google video and of course you will be able to see your beautiful selves @ times as well as some of your other favorite dancers....

Coming up within the next week or so I will have posted scenes from SHADOW DANCE captured in Oakland Ca. on Nov. 10th. Also you will be able to see the teaser for Unmata's Bllod Moon Regale video recorded October 28th in Sacramento Ca. This will be the prelude to a DVD viewing party that is in the works....

(If you performed in any of these shows or any shows you see me with my camera and do not want your performances on You Tube please let me know, I will gladly respect your wishes)

Much Love!
